The Old Man and the Sea is the story of an epic struggle between an old, seasoned fisherman and the greatest catch of his life. Shortly after his visit there Hemingway and his wife were unlucky enough to endure two plane crashes one day after another: one, in a chartered plane near Murchison Falls, and then another the day after at Lake Albert, where their rescue plane crashed and burned on take-off. The author must have met Whichello during this time, and inscribed this copy of The Old Man and the Sea to him at Laitokotok. Given the affectionate nature of the inscription one might presume that the author was grateful to Whichello for his assistance and aid during this difficult time. The Park's chief attraction is, of course, Mount Kilimanjaro, the setting for one of the author's most celebrated stories, "The Snows of Kilimanjaro". The place of inscription, Laitokotok, also known as Loitokitok or Oloitokitok, is on the Kenya/Tanzania border, near Amboselli National Park, which Hemingway visited with his wife in January 1954. The recipient is Ian Richard Whichello (d.1979, Seaton, Devon), a member of the Kenyan Police in the 1950s. | Laitokotok 1954"), original cloth, cloth worn and slightly torn The Reprint Society London, 1953Ĩvo, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ("For Ian | with much affection | Ernest Hemingway. ![]()
